Our Troopy

With our Troopy, we started a new chapter. We want to spend more time in nature, travel independently, and explore remote places together with our dog Pino. The Troopy is the foundation of this project and the base for many adventures ahead. Join us as we build our perfect overlander vehicle.

The vehicle

Our car is a Toyota Land Cruiser J78, commonly known as the Troopy, model year 2025, powered by a 4.0 V6 gasoline engine with 228 hp. We chose this vehicle for its very good off road capability, proven robustness and reliability, and the option for a roof conversion. Beyond its technical strengths, it also has a unique character and the perfect size for the way we travel and live on the road.

First modifications (outsourced)

We decided to install a new heavy duty front bumper, including an integrated winch and additional LED lighting. This setup not only improves the vehicle’s recovery capability and safety off road, but also adds functionality and a more purposeful expedition look right from the start.

First modifications (by us)

As part of our own first modifications, we installed a new head unit with Apple CarPlay, upgraded the system with a Kenwood sound setup, and added JBL speakers. This upgrade significantly improved navigation, connectivity, and overall sound quality, making long drives and remote travel much more comfortable and enjoyable.

We also had an Alu-Cab Hercules 2.0 roof conversion installed. This upgrade transforms the Troopy into a true expedition vehicle, creating additional living and sleeping space while maintaining the vehicle’s strength and reliability. It allows us to travel more independently and comfortably, wherever the road takes us.

As preparation for fitting all terrain tires, we installed Kut Snakes and extended fender flares. These upgrades provide additional protection against dirt and stone chips while ensuring proper coverage for the wider AT tires. In addition, we installed a CB radio including a dedicated antenna, as well as a rear view camera to improve communication and maneuvering in remote areas.

We also installed gullwing windows from Explore Glazing. One can be fully opened from the outside, one rear window is completely blacked out, and the others are fitted with protective grilles. So far, we have completed three, with two more planned. Our goal was to improve ventilation while maintaining security, allowing us to open the windows without the risk of anyone getting inside, especially with our dog Pino in the vehicle.

We also upgraded to the new BFGoodrich All Terrain KO3 tires, which had just been released to the market. For the wheels, we chose the Evo Corse DakarZero rims, a brand with a strong heritage in rally racing. This combination not only enhances off road performance and durability, but also gives the Troopy a purposeful and authentic expedition look.
